San Jose History Park

How did I not know there’s a History Park? OK, so it is in San Jose, (which I do know the way to) but still! Super neato.

I don’t know that any of the buildings are at original locations, but the Park recreates a small US town of the early 1900s. There’s a downtown area, with a hotel, printing shop, and other businesses, a residential area with several houses, a one room school-house and more.

There are several museums in the Park: Printing in the Print Shop, Trolleys in the Trolley Barn, a Chinese Museum, a Vietnamese Museum, a Greek Museum, a Portuguese Museum, and the Stevens Ranch Fruit Barn, which houses exhibits about family farms and the fruit industry in the Valley of Heart’s Delight (now Silicon Valley.) At its peak production, more than a third of all the fruit canned in the world was from Santa Clara County. (From History Park signage.)

This Post Office came into existence as the original location was in too close proximity to a saloon. Apparently there were rules about that.

I didn't know San Jose had a Poetry Center either. It wasn't open while I was there though, so I don't know much more now than that there is such a thing.

OH and (most importantly) there's Ice Cream! Fun factoid from History Park signage: O'Brien's was the first place to serve ice cream sodas west of Detroit, in 1878.
