Even planning to visit and seeing the pictures, so knowing that it’s there, seeing the sign… nothing quite prepares one for the sight of Stonehenge on a bluff above the Columbia River. One of those goofy crazy amazing things.
You can drive right up and park next to it, and walk around inside and out. There are great views up and down river, and I was there in the early evening, so the light was wonderful and cast fantastic shadows. Fascinating shapes and interplay between the pillars and the ring and the landscape outside and looking out or in.
I have not yet been to the original, so I have no idea how this compares, although even without comparing it’s a cool thing in and of itself.
I don’t quite understand the connection, but it was built by Sam Hill as a WWI memorial and dedicated to the servicemen of Klickitat County in 1918. Hill was also one of the founders of the Maryhill Museum of Art, which, alas, I was too late to visit.
