Low key, bordering on nondescript. Or at least not much indication of the delights waiting inside. They do have a really nice stained glass sign in the window but the light wasn’t right to capture it.
My recent vacation in Honolulu was a wonderful, warm, relaxing visit with family. Since I’d been there before I didn’t feel like I had to go out and see and do everything in the guide-book or anything.
I also got to meet up with a friend for lunch. Which got me thinking about food (doesn’t take much) and reminded me that I do like to check out the local ice cream when I travel. After some super yummy ramen she took me to Bubbies!
Which would be easy to drive right by, it doesn’t really stand out in any way. But plenty of people know it’s there! There was a steady stream of customers the whole time we were there.
They have a variety of ice creams and ice cream desserts. I was entertained by the dessert names (which didn’t seem to have descriptions, so I just had wonder what they really consisted of) and intrigued by the Black Sesame ice cream, and had a taste (surprisingly good), but their signature item is their mochi ice cream, so I went with that.
Even after deciding to get the mochi ice cream, there were still a lot of choices! 13 regular flavors, 5 special flavor, 3 chocolate dipped. They all sounded good. I got a chocolate-dipped chocolate espresso, chocolate eggnog, guava and sakura (cherry flavored mochi with vanilla ice cream). My friend also got a chocolate-dipped chocolate espresso, and passion and green tea.
I probably should have started with the fruit flavored ones, but I ate them in the order above. They were all super tasty, but the chocolate eggnog was a hard act to follow.
And I started in right away, so the first one was still pretty hard from the freezer. They really are better if you let them warm up a bit. The mochi is softer, the ice cream creamier and the flavor is fuller. But it’s hard to just sit there and look at them and wait.
