Mission Dolores

Mission San Francisco de Asís, or Mission Dolores is the sixth of the California missions. Now with San Francisco grown up around it, it’s hard to imagine what it must have been like when it was established in 1776.

With all the associated buildings it takes up much of a city block. There were signs for a tour, but I was there too late and so did not get to go inside. But I’d never been before, so it was neat to see the outsides of the buildings and I could kind of see into the cemetery area. I’ll have to go back to see more.

This is not what it looked like to the Padres.

There was a concert going on in the basilica, a mandolin orchestra I think the sign said. From outside the door I could hear bits of the music when there were breaks in the traffic outside. It sounded quite lovely, it must be a great venue for music.
